Crocodile Tears
an excerpt

They were hurtling towards the whirling black center of the tunnel, and the tiny pin prick of white in the center of all the black was growing bigger and bigger as they drew closer towards it. Kayla buried her head into the crook of Ian’s neck, as the light started to hurt her eyes, or that is what she told herself was the reason, it was more like she was scared out of her wits, and didn’t feel like watching herself go towards the light, and according to what writers for years have told her, it was not going to be going into the light.

And then suddenly, the three of them were engulfed entirely by white light. There was this noise, like a door being banged open, and then there was this whisper over the loud whirring noise of the vortex that said, “someone let the pesky butterfly in, now there will be hell to pay.”

Then everything just stopped, all sound, all light, everything was just black, like some one put a stop on the world. Kayla opened her eyes, and she was floating in the black abyss. She knew there was no explanation for her being able to see herself, for there was no light to help her retinas see, but she looked at her hand and she could see it as clear as day. She floated around in a circle to see if there was anything out there, but there was nothing, she was all alone in space. She felt a crushing loneliness that only happens to those that are completely isolated from the world as she was right now, she wrapped her arms around herself and scrunched herself into a ball, trying to take comfort in anyway she can. But the realization that she was the only being in this mockery of a world wouldn’t leave her alone. And then suddenly there was a pair of huge violet eyes in front of her.

She quickly back stroked to get away form them, but they still seemed just as close as they were before. The corners of the pair of eyes crinkled up at her attempts of escape. And then suddenly out of nowhere a voice spoke that was both beautiful and terrible in the same breath, it shook Kayla to the very bones, its melodic tones reverberating in her marrow.

“Relax child, I am not here to hurt you, I am here to help you.”

“Where am I?” Kayla asked in a tiny voice, trying to imagine the face that went with such an outlandish pair of eyes.

“You are in the between, a place where worlds touch but never meet. A no mans land if you will, where every thing exists and where everything doesn’t,” said the voice cryptically, which Kayla thought really didn’t answer her question and her forehead furrowed in confusion.

“I see that you still don’t understand, but that is understandable, for you are not used to such magic, which is a pity, since your little world was filled with some of the most beautiful and powerful magic there ever was, but it has since faded out of existence. Look,” said the voice, gesturing with its eyes towards a faint blue streak that was tearing across the space to Kayla’s right.

“There is your hint, now what do you think it is?” questioned the eyes, slightly teasingly.

“This is where the tunnel passed through?” Kayla asked in amazement, her eyes tracing the blue dot’s path, remembering what Ian said about unpleasant things beyond the walls of the tunnel.

“Aren’t you the perceptive one? Now, you are probably wondering why I pulled you here.”

Kayla rolled her eyes at the voice’s teasing, but nodded in assent, for she really was wondering why she was pulled her, and she was a little wary to hear the actual answer to her question.

“You, my dear, are a catalyst, unforeseen and unwanted by some, but you will bring change whether people want it or not. You are not even a part of my plans, and I have no idea if you are a pawn of some one else’s machinations, or you are just being pulled to my world because of fate or chance. I guess we shall just have to wait and see what happens, shall we?”

Who in their right minds would use me as a pawn in their evil plot? Maybe if they want their enemies bitch slapped to death maybe, or to have their fiscal profits frozen.

“But how did I specifically get drawn into this? If you say it was all up to random chance I want to complain to the universe and ask for a refund,” scowled Kayla, seating her self cross legged on an empty piece of air, no longer nervous around the giant purple eyes, which was strange in it of itself, since she was terrified of them before, she wondered if the eyes were working some sort of spell on her.

“Luck of the draw sweet heart, but I do really think there is something bigger going on here and you are not a victim of chance, and surprisingly I haven’t picked up on it, which worries me. Hopefully my own plans are not in jeopardy, but it will be seen soon enough won’t it.”

“Hey, um…Ms. Eyes, are you an all powerful being of um…magic and stuff?” Kayla asked hesitantly, as she inwardly fumed over the voice’s casual handling of her crisis, she was not supposed to be here, this was a tragedy of epic proportions.

“Ms. Eyes? How amusing,” the voice chuckled, “ I will not go as far as saying I am all powerful, but I think it is safe to say I am somewhat powerful with the magic…and stuff.”
