Excerpt: Psych-Out (working title)

Jo awoke in a cold sweat, a pounding headache just above her eyes blinding her more than the darkness around her ever could have. An eagle’s cry from her dreams still reverberated through her head. With a sigh and a scowl, she rolled upright and slid off the bed, careful to mind a spring that had broken through the mattress. Moonlight spilled in narrow slats through the blinds, striping her feet and the cold tile floor as she padded to the sink in the corner and splashed some cold water on her face from the tap. Once she had the pain under better control, she returned to the bed and sat down, barely hearing the creak of the frame over the ringing in her ears. “You won’t get me back that easily,” she muttered to the darkness.
