Synopsis: The Coming Age Of Electricity
As fantastic as it sounds, future home appliances will NOT be driven by piped-in steam from the boiler in the basement, but by electrons traveling through wires safely hidden away in the walls. Devices will be not just safer but also more efficient than ever, and there's the possibility of entirely new technologies to make modern life even easier than it is today.
This is the story of the inventors of these new technologies, their lives and those of their families and associates, as they boldly predict the end of the Steam Age and live in a world where they believe great and wonderful change is near.
Excerpt: The Coming Age Of Electricity
"Electricity will kill you. All you have to do is just touch the wire. Once. And then you're dead.
What's the worst that can happen with steam? I suppose it's what happened to my mother. She was at the washer, she pushed the lever to stop it, and the pressure pipe cracked open and sprayed her legs with steam. It was a hot day and she was wearing a dress that only came down to her knees, so her lower legs got some bad burns. The doctor says she'll eventually be okay and walk again, though her legs are horribly disfigured.
But if that had happened with an electrical wire she'd be dead."
