Spirits on the Wind
an excerpt
A scream rent the air, as he crashed to the ground, losing his grip on the blood prize that he held in this hand.
<”Where did you get that knife, Siksika dog!”> a deep guttural voice spit into his ear. His assailant gripping his hair, yanking his head back, exposing his neck, as he struggled to defend himself.
<”Dog, answer me!”> the person screamed as he yanked him around to face him The smear of war paint created a more vicious face, as penetrating black eyes bore into his.
As he lay helpless, in the grip of a stranger, he looked into his eyes, as he gasped <”Shoshoni”> His mind raced and he continued to struggle, knowing that his struggle might be in vain as everything began to slowly spin around him. He heard screaming, both of victory and of terror. His thought drifted to clear face in the back of his brain as he silently whispered <”Hrit Oota Dubun (Beautiful Day Star)”> A scream escaped his lips, adding to the growing din, as a sliver of pain entered the side of his body, feeling the blood wet his already damp clothing.
<”You will die, dog for what you have done. Stealer of meat!” his assailant screamed in his face, waving a blood knife in his face. All he could done is watch, weakly struggling to escape and fight. In horror, the knife rose as the Shoshoni warrior screamed a victorious cry, above him. The plunging weapon cutting into his body like liquid fire as his scream mirrored the warrior's cry.
