an excerpt
The thunder roared across the vast, dark expanse as rain pelted down to the already muddy ground below. Like little muddy ants, soldiers were crawling across the field. Horses galloped towards the enemy whilst fallen riders struggled to avoid their hooves. Blood was everywhere. Death was everywhere. This was war.
The two boys were not far apart. Their horses were close matched for speed and no one had cut them off. One called out to the other in a frightened, strangled voice. "Tim, It's so real."
"Too real." The other replied. "I feel sick."
Tim gasped as a soldier was wrenched from his horse and sent to the ground with his skull cracked. The massacre was all around him, on top of him.
Ducking as an enemy soldier aimed at him with his weapon, Tim struggled to see his friend. The crowd was moving so fast it was impossible to see anyone.
The black stallion he was riding reared up and Tim could feel himself slipping. He struggled to grasp the wet, slimy leather of his horses saddle, bridal, anything!
Thump. He hit the ground. His back felt as if it were splintering all around him. He could smell the blood and death and fear. It was all there.
The mud was wet and pulled him down. He tried to move but he he couldn't. "Help me!" He screamed, but no one could hear him.
Out of the corner of his eye he caught the sight of his friend's face. It was caught in a stunned expression and was looking straight at him. The boy started running towards his fallen comrade, but it was too late. Time screamed as the huge black hoof slammed into his head. He could feel himself losing consciousness. His body growing warm and fuzzy. The last sight he saw was his friend gazing down at his face a mixture of shock and anguish. The face grew blurry as Tim's eyes slowly shut and his head lolled back.
