Shadow of the Raven
an excerpt

Rinna had stopped spinning. She was carried on a flow of rippling light that was no longer violent and raging. The roaring in her head had subsided to a mild hum. Gav still held tightly to her wrist, his wings outstretched in a glide as he rode the light. It was like flying and swimming and floating and falling all at once. Breathing was difficult. The dreadful feeling of drowning had left her, but Rinna still had to work hard to calm herself and pull in long, slow sips of air.
What was happening to her? When would this end? She saw the rippling streams of light twisting out forever in front of her. She managed to turn her head enough to look behind, but nothing existed beyond the soles of her feet. She was on a one way ride.
Seconds, or maybe centuries had passed. She could see the world move by, distorted through the light. She was above the world, under it, inside it. She passed through homes, ghosting through wood walls and stone, passing the people who lived there without being seen. She flew high above farmlands, and pastures and the rooftops of towns. She traveled through mountain, rock and dirt, the light tunneling a way before her.
I’m dead, she thought. I died right where Mam did. Pa was right. I should never have gone there. Now he’s all alone. I have to go back!
Rinna began to fight against the current, thrashing and kicking, trying to break free of the flow and turn around. Gav’s talons dug deep into her wrist as she dragged him back. They were a jumble of wing and feather, arm and leg. The light became a blinding flash.
And then… nothing.
