Excerpt: In Blackest Night

“Who is this?” Karrie asked. The line went dead.
“Hello? Hello?” Karrie called into the phone and then hung it up.
She frowned at the strangeness of the call as she turned to go back into the kitchen. But as soon as she turned her back, the phone rang again. She turned slowly, looking down at it, all most wary to answer it. Slowly she reached out a hand and picked it up. She held it to her ear for a moment before saying a quiet, “Hello?”
“Mrs. Ingleford.” It was the same voice.
“Who is this? What do you want?” Karrie's voice rose to a high pitch.
“Do you love your husband?” the voice suddenly broke into a weird giggle.
“What?” Karrie asked in some confusion.
“If you love your husband, you will do as I say.” the voice continued.
“What do you know of my husband?” Karrie asked.
“I know enough that if you do not listen to me now, he will die as sure as I live and breathe.” the voice nearly cackled with laughter.
