February 12, 1765
Near the Port of Boston, Massachusetts
One of the Rooms For Rent of The Bear Tavern and Inn
Rebel Acts Start to Begin- An Account of Mister Samuel Adams
I have learned from overhearing Mister Samuel Adams that he plans to start a new organization, which will fight new taxes and laws put into effect by the British Parliament. I heard about this organization- they were active after the institution of the Sugar Act and the Currency Act as well. They call themselves the Sons of Liberty. Maybe I should consider organizing some other women for protests against new British interference in colonial affairs. We should call ourselves the Daughters of Liberty!
I should ask Mister Samuel Adams tomorrow about organizing this group, the Daughters of Liberty. He should have some excellent ideas for me, and then I will meet with some of my friends in town who appreciate the fact that I am educated and own my own business, unlike most women and men in my town, near the Port of Boston. Maybe I can keep one of the rooms here at the Bear Tavern and Inn open every Monday night, when the Daughters of Liberty could meet to talk about ideas and recent events. We could start to change the economy of each of our families to avoid using items that are taxed by the Navigation Acts, and if only one person buys the newspaper for the group each week, we will not have to pay as many taxes as a group.
We could even make our own clothes to start to ruin mainland Great Britain’s economy, so that they would repeal the Navigation Acts, and maybe even the Stamp Act! We could also cut sugar out of our diets and food and drinks because sugar is one of the items taxed by Britain to pay for the French and Indian War, and I have learned from talking to Mister John Dickinson that, even though the tax is minimal, if they can tax us even just a small amount, where does that right to tax us just because they are our mother country end, and where does it become unreasonable, and will Great Britain and Parliament recognize that point?

Off to meet with Mister Samuel Adams about the Daughters of Liberty and peaceful protests.
Until Next Time, Yours faithfully and truly,
Mary Elizabeth Dunlevy
