The Doctor's Touch
an excerpt
Life for Megan Ellison could not be better. She was 18, and had finally finished her studies with Doctor Eustace Bagwell, and was now working in his office as a nurse. She was an aunt of three, and would about to be an aunt to a fourth, and she did not have a beau to tie her down 9because she refused to have a season, which thoroughly displeased her mother, Lydia). Megan’s spirits were high. This all started to change when Doctor Bagwell told her he was retiring.
“Sir, you can’t do this?”
“Megan, dear, I have too. I am getting too old for this. I can’t risk hurting someone because my eyesight isn’t as good or my hands aren’t as nimble as they used to be. It’s just getting to be too much of a strain on an old man like me’
He explained to her
“Sir, what is going to happen to your practice…? I mean…well, that is to say”…
She started, trying not to sound selfish
Eustace smiled
“You mean what is going to happen to you?”
Megan sighed and nodded her head
“I’m not going to leave you without employment my dear. I have already begun to hire someone in my stead”
He stated
Megan looked at him
“His name is Peter Andrews. He’s is an excellent new doctor who lives in Brighton. I have met him a few times at meeting and such and he seems to be a great man to take over the practice for me”
“Does he know about me, sir?”
“Indeed he does Megan, and he does not seem to mind at all”
“A female for an assistant, can you even believe this?”
Said Peter
“Perhaps it’ll be nice”
Said Dominic Herndon, Peter’s best friend who had studied Medicine with him
“I don’t know. Eustace Bagwell taught her and says she’s fully competent but I am very skeptical”
“Perhaps she is. When do you leave?”
“Oh, in a month or so. He wants to be able to tell all his patients before I come waltzing into town” he said and sighed
“Why did you take the job? It doesn’t sound like you want it”
“I want my own practice, Dom. Eustace Bagwell is giving me the chance. He just seemed adamant about keeping his assistant”
“What is her name again?”
“Megan Ellison”
