Excerpt: Hunter in the Secrets

Moira tried not to focus on the coldness of the freezing water running over her hand. Alfred and Caspian had decided to follow the river and see what it was like further up-stream, so Moira would have a couple of minutes to herself. But even before her bottle was full, she heard something that made her heart stop beating for a split second, and sent shivers down her spine.

At the sound of rotten laughter she had instinctively closed her eyes, but still lying on her stomach, knowing she was all alone, she couldn’t keep them closed for long. Her scream was soundless as she opened her eyes, and turning around looked into another pair of eyes. Dark, dark grey eyes that were only centimetres away from her own baby blue ones.

Her breath was rapid breath. After what seemed like hours she lost the grip on her bottle and stumbled backwards, desperate to get away. The laughter was still there, but looking back now she could see that her fears had been needless. With a mischievous smile on her face, Beth pulled back and looked away, trying her best not to laugh. Moira on the other hand, was fuming.

Enraged Moira stumbled to her feet, taking a few steps back and using language that would make her grandmother turn in her grave.
