We Know the Truth
an excerpt
He put on his overalls and backed into the driveway. The name, Perfect Painters could be seen from the side of the van. The remote garage door opener worked like a charm, and he glided inside in seconds. Daisy barked loudly from the back yard. It didn’t faze him. Working quickly—just as he had at Penny’s other two abodes—he placed a tiny object inside the back of the telephone base. Once the wireless transmitter was positioned, he moved stealthily from room to room. Miniscule voice transmitters were hidden from view. His last port of call was the computer in the other girl’s room. Plugging in a USB key, he downloaded a list of every site and page she had been looking at in the previous 2 weeks. Diana had been smart enough to set up a firewall, and he was unable to see her online activity from the van. He downloaded some spyware onto it. Seven minutes later he emerged from the garage and pulled down the door. His job was done.
Back in the van, he perfected his receiver system to eliminate any background noise, moved down the street and texted a number.
We’re set up now. He then sat up at the front of the van and waited for Penny to come home.
Sean got the text and snapped his phone shut. Penny was getting to be quite a handful. He had never imagined that she would go this far to find out why—she had always accepted his plans up til now; never called him when she knew he was busy; been the perfect wife and minded her own business. He had never told her what he did, and he would never tell her why he had left her.
“Never,” he muttered, yet now she was getting closer to finding out the truth about him…his ugly secret. If she got any closer then everything he had worked and planned for would be lost.
