Synopsis: Heart's Discord
Rori Aevan is a half-demon mercenary, wandering around the expansive lands of Antis-Ethium with a rag-tag group of followers: Enin Paeldor, a cleric of the god of Protection; Aiden Mori, sorcerer; and Caiman Lyason, thief. The peace between the Nations of Antis-Ethium, which has been kept for nearly 300 years, is about to break, and Rori and her wayward group of traveling companions seem to be the only ones able to stop it.
Well, so life goes.
There's just one setback: Lorenna, Rori's demon half. She's constantly fighting for control of Rori's body, and fighting only makes her stronger. If Lorenna wins out, Antis-Ethium is most likely doomed.
But only most likely.
Excerpt: Heart's Discord
As she watched, Estan swiftly lunged forward and stabled straight through the straw dummy, withdrawing the blade moments later and almost skittering backwards.
Aiden whistled. “Never knew you to be much of a fighter, Estan.”
Estan jumped about a foot in the air at Aiden’s words. “Aiden?!”
Aiden grinned in response. Estan grinned as well and hugged him. “What’re you doing back in Mytopian? I assumed you wouldn’t be back for years.” He eyed Rhindani. “…And certainly not with a dragon on your shoulders.”
“Circumstances dictated otherwise,” Aiden said with a shrug and a smile.
“What circumstances?” Estan asked, brow knit. “And who’re your friends?”
Aiden did a round of introductions before explaining the situation. Estan’s frown became deeper and more worried as he went on.
“You killed the Mayour of Erimill?” Estan exclaimed in a hushed voice.
“He would’ve killed us if we hadn’t,” Rori retorted.
“And he started it,” Caiman added, almost childishly.
Estan shook his head. “Still. I’m not sure what we can do to help.” He leaned against a wall. “We can protect you as long as you stay in Atlunova, but that’ll become problematic after awhile, given your curse, Aiden.”
Aiden nodded. “I’m technically already on borrowed time. We got here last night.”
Estan sighed. “Not much time then. We should talk to my CO.”
“Your CO?”
“The General. Second-in-command of the National Guard.”
Aiden frowned. “I’m not sure we should be telling just anyone about this…”
Estan fixed Aiden with a very pointed look. “I really think we should talk to the General about this,” he said, quietly. “He’ll help, and has access to resources I don’t.”
Aiden stared back for a moment before nodding. “If you insist.”
Estan stood up again, beckoning for them to follow. Rori frowned as she fell in step beside Aiden.
“Lots of the soldiers here seem to know magic,” she said to Estan.
“All of them seem to know magic,” he responded wryly. “It’s one of the requirements to join the Guard.”
Rori arched an eyebrow. “Why?”
Estan shrugged. “We’re a magic-using nation. It’s tradition.”
They approached a door with the words “Majour General Auyen Kyson” carved into the wood. Aiden frowned a bit as he read the words. Estan lifted a hand, signaling them to stop before he knocked on the door.
“Yes?” called a voice from the other side.
“It’s Lieutenant Colonel Kyrindor, sir. I’ve got someone who wants to see you.”
“Come in, Colonel,” the voice responded.
