The conversation was ending on a very different note to the one on which it had begun.
They faced each other almost as strangers. Sure, each knew the other’s name, and something of the other’s history, and each might have once distinguished himself as knowing the other better than anyone else – but no longer. Tim and Tom stood at either end of the lounge, looking at each other and trying to work out if there was anything familiar left in the face of the other man.
