Muddling Through
an excerpt

“But why should we be kept alive?” asked Sophie “If we’re just going to remain static forever, we might as well go extinct like other species. We have this really complicated system, just to keep a few thousand people alive, just to make sure nobody will affect anybody else, but surely one day there will be too many communities for it to work. Maybe we were all supposed to die back then, perhaps the plagues were just nature’s pest control.”
“That’s quite a depressing point of view,” said Lucy.
“I know. Maybe I should leave the philosophising to the Thinkers, and stick to baking cakes!”
