Susan and John Purcell married at the height of the 1980s materialism swing. Both professionally successful, they've now become bored with their carefree and passionless marriage. They both seek a sense of "newness" that would fulfill their "separate" lives, but they also refuse to divorce, thinking it an inconvenience on their seemingly "peaceful" agreement. They both fall in and out of affairs with other people, but it isn't until John loses his 20 year old lover to another man that he discovers the senselessness of his life. A hasty "escape" from his terrible life routine finds him in Oxford, England where he exchanges his life of professional glamour for a simple job at a bookstore. It is there that he meets Prinna, an Indian graduate student that not only befriends him, but enables him to forge a new path for himself.
