Synopsis: Arcane Solutions
When the clock ticked over from 1999 to 2000, all the gloom and doom predictions hadn’t prepared us for what did happen: the Melding.
Nine years later, we’re still adjusting to the re-appearance of magic and beings out of fairytales. It seems our biggest problems are cultural differences and a new upsurge in prejudice.
But someone has stolen an old book from an elf’s library. With that simple act, the world’s hovering on the brink of complete ruin.
And I’m supposed to help save it.
Wish me luck. I’m going to need it.
Excerpt: Arcane Solutions
Half a dozen vampires melted from the shadows to block my way. One moved a few steps closer. "Discord Jones. My master wishes to speak with you."
"Sorry, I'm a little busy right now. Have him call the office and make an appointment." I was frantically making a plan. Vampires move much faster than humans.
"He's an impatient man."
"Really? Wow, you'd think a master vampire would've learned patience is a virtue."
He scowled at me. "You will come with us. There's the easy way, human, or the..."
I sent him flying into a wall with a shove of TK. Another vampire sped towards me in a blur of movement and I screamed as he tackled me.
We rolled for several feet, but I managed to break free and shoved, slamming him into two others. A third blurred, hands outstretched as he paused directly before me.
Something big and black dropped onto the vampire, taking it to the ground. Logan's deep, velvety mental voice whispered my name: /Discord/
I scrambled backwards, spotting another of the vampires rushing towards us. Flinging a hand out, I called fire from the air around him and he burst into flames. A shove sent him flying backwards.
The panther was in front of me then, baring gore stained fangs as he hissed. /Up!/
"Okay!" Grabbing a handful of thick fur, I used my TK to loft us into the air and onto the roof above. The second his paws touched down, Logan shook my hand off. /This way/
Sounds of bodies landing behind us sent me racing after him, as he led me over the roof tops without looking back. All too soon, we reached the end of the block, but Logan turned and changed, catching me up before throwing us off the roof's edge.
I squeaked, frantically grasping for one of my abilities to stop our fall, but not in time. It didn't matter, because Logan landed on his feet and then there were people all around us.
Arms securely around his neck, I looked up because everyone else was. Pale faces peered down at us, but faded from sight as low growls erupted from a dozen throats.
"You do tend to attract trouble, Discord." Logan was grinning when I turned my head to look at him. "Must be that name."
Slightly stunned by the drop, I said, "My middle name's Angel."
He laughed. "Maybe you should start using it."
