Excerpt:
“Move!” he yelled, pushing me out of the way. I had just enough time to brace myself before the explosion hit.
As I waited for the blast’s power to subside, I wondered, not for the first time, how I had gotten here.
It was not an idle question.
Strong hands grabbed me, and I shrieked. I hadn’t been expecting to be grabbed from that direction.
“Katherine!” Tobias yelled. “Shut up! Don’t tell them--” his voice was cut off as I saw one of the men who had grabbed him punch the side of his head. He went limp. I was yanked to my feet and marched away. Tobias and his captors were ahead of us, and he was being carried more than he was walking. I tried to push down my terror.
They threw us in separate cells.
I huddled in the corner, cold, shivering, and absolutely miserable. I ached all over. My clothes were tattered. I wanted a cigarette. And I was chained to the wall, so escape to The Road was impossible. Not that I was sure that I could escape to The Road from the Head Caretaker’s dungeon anyway, since it was in the strange realm called The Road.
