God Play
an excerpt

"Apfil lad down on a tree as she said this. Adam did the same on the same tree on the opposite side. He wasn't sleepy, he was having an adrenalin rush from the fight. He wondered why Apfil could be sleepy when she went through the same thing. But not caring he gazed at the stars in thought. It was particularly cloudless that night, and the stars were shining more than ever. Unexpectedly he hears Apfil's voice.
“Adam, I know that's the whole goal of all this, but, before we find out, I wanted to ask what you thought we are.”
“Apfil, I always wonder about it. I'm afraid I can't ever find a satisfying answer for myself. But whoever we turn out to be, there's one thing for certain that I know.”
“What's that?”
“I know, that you are Apfil, and no one else. And I'm Adam, no matter what my origins may be, I am always me.”
Apfil thought about that answer, and started to laugh.
“What's so funny?”
“Adam, that idea may be true, but if that's what your thinking, than this whole thing is meaningless.”
Adam gave an unsatisfied look, despite the fact that she couldn't see it.
“Not necessarily. I want to know my true parents, for example. It would help me find that right?”
When Adam said this, Apfil stopped laughing. It took her a while to respond.
“You know what I think. I think we don't have any parents.”
Adam was unsatisfied again.
“What do you mean? I mean, how can that be possible?”
“Judging by what has happening to us, with all these weird things attacking us, and the government being all desperate about killing us, made me think of the possibility that we might be the product of some kind of inhumane experiment.”
Adam was silent.
“Both of us were over performers in training camp. But neither of us have the typical personality of an over achiever. It's as though we didn't even have to try to be the best. We already were the best. . . you know what I want to know?”
“What do you want to know?”
“Why. That's what I want to know.”
A strange silence covered the area. The sound of insects and the wind dominated the area. Adam breaks the silence.
“I want to know why too Apfil. I want to know too.”
“Thank you Adam, you know you didn't have to come with me on this.”
“No Apfil, I'm the one to thank you, I would of live the rest of my life completely ignorant of so many things with out you.”
“. . . Thank you any way, and good night.”
“Good night Apfil.”
And so they slept right there that night."
