The Dark Room
an excerpt

Eddie shuffled into the apartment and locked the door behind him. Leaving the keys in the door, he walked through the darkness straight to his bedroom and onto the bed. Before the thoughts of Jacob could enter his conscious, Eddie was fast asleep, so the thoughts chose to enter his dreams instead.

Eddie found himself in a room. Although it was completely dark, he could tell it was still a room, not an endless plain leading into abyss. After all, it was his dream. He heard footsteps, coming toward him from all directions. Eddie shut his eyes, and when he opened them again, the footsteps had stopped and he came face to face with the man he had been chasing for what seemed like a lifetime.
“Hello Eddie. Now, bef-,” Jacob stopped talking as Eddie drew his gun.
“Hands up.” Said Eddie. He had rehearsed this situation a thousand times during daydreams, and even real dreams. “Wait…”
“Yes, I didn’t think you were stupid enough to accept this as reality. Now, as I was saying: I’m here to give you a message, if you choose to hear it.” Said Jacob, in a strange mix between American and English accent. Eddie didn’t know whether it was his real voice. After all, it was just a dream.
“I’m all ears,” Eddie said, through a breath.
“Ah, I thought as much. Listen carefully Eddie. You and I will find ourselves in this exact situation not long from now, and you will have to make a choice. I won’t provide any resistance; you will be able to take me off to prison where I can rot away forever. But you know as well as I do, I will still plague your every thought. Everything that went wrong in your life you will end up blaming on me. Even that divorce of yours. Your second choice will be to listen. Just listen to me, and what I have to tell you. After that you can take me away, or even kill me if you so desire. You may want to after you have heard what I have to say.”
