Tentative: "The Amory Wars: The Fall of Heaven and the Machinations of Man"
an excerpt
They had held out for a long period of time, far longer than Will had thought possible under the inevitable onslaught of the Red Army. He was running on empty, and those who remained to fight with him had wounds of their own, several of which Will had done his best to repair, keeping flesh bound to bone for as long as he could…for as long as they could damage the cogs of Ryan’s war machine, their loss would not have been completely in vain.
He now led a doomed march forward through the Red Army ranks, having cut a swatch of destruction fuelled by berserker rage through their lines. Even as his mind dwelled on battle it strayed to Chase, his eyes catching a glimpse of transport lights disappearing over the city.
Thank you for this favour, Sizer…
“Onward!” he called, charging around another corner to greet more of the enemy with hot steel. He skidded to a halt and dove sideways as he thought he recognized what looked like the colours of a commanding officer.
Deftinwolf!
He checked his ammo count…this would be it. He could take out the Red Army’s General before falling…it would not end the war but it would put a severe dent in the efforts of Wilhelm Ryan.
“Let’s go General!” he screamed, charging the enemy with his remaining troops. They cut down several grunts, but the sheer amount of return fire was taking its toll as one of his comrades fell with each meter they advanced. His mind was focused on only one thing, and that was the man positioned atop a shattered wreck of a cruiser in front of him. He reached down into the last wells of his strength, drawing upon the abilities his father gave him. With one giant push he leapt high into the air, discarding his empty gun and drawing the large sabre strapped to his leg.
The General’s dark visage greeted him suddenly as Mayo leapt to meet him in midair, catching him in the stomach with a hard elbow. The impact drove the breath out of his lungs and he fell hard to the ground, the jolt of landing sending his sabre bouncing out of reach.
“Pathetic,” the General sneered, spitting on the ground in front of Will.
Gripping his midsection, Will stumbled to his feet, putting all he had into charging again at the General. Mayo’s blood red right eye began to glow brightly, and Will felt an intense pressure building behind his forehead, causing him to fall to his knees in agony as the feeling intensified.
“And so all will come to bow,” he could barely hear the General utter.
Unhf…Chase…I…lov-
The square fell silent as the brave leader of the Pioneers fell, blood leaking from his eyes and ears, having passed on before his head fell against the crimson spattered concrete.
Mayo stood above the fallen body, silent for a few moments more, before turning in a swirl of his robes to quell the rest of the uprising in the city. One of his captains attended his side.
“Sir…we have reports that we managed to capture one of them alive,” the man said, still gasping from having sprinted across the city to deliver the news.
“Good,” Mayo said shortly, lacing his fingers together behind his back, “Prepare the prisoner for interrogation…we must find out where the Inferno has gone into hiding.”
“Sir!” the captain saluted, dashing off again to issue the General’s orders.
The city had fallen silent, the Pioneers last pockets of resistance crushed. Sever had been correct, as had Will…peace again reigned over the city…a peace stained by the march of Wilhelm’s self-righteous Red Army.
