Synopsis: Star Wars: The Emperor's New Thorn [Working Title]

The Empire is not long in existence when the resistance that would become the Rebel Alliance stirs from the still-warm ashes that was once the Republic.

A padawan, serving far away with his Jedi Master when Order 66 is given, has returned to heart of the Empire to carry out that most ancient of Jedi duties: to serve the Republic, the weak, and the oppressed.

A twi'lek, the privileged younger daughter of a successful merchant family, is dismayed by the increasingly anti-alien sentiment promulgated by the New Order: she travels with a droid protector (also unpopular in the aftermath of the Clone Wars) to find a new place for her in an increasingly hostile Empire.

A younger son of industrialists, nowhere in danger of being oppressed in the new Human First society, but desiring an age of equality for his friends and family that the Empire is unwilling to accommodate.

A near-Human hedonist pried from her resort of a homeworld, thrust into the infinitely more exciting world of galactic politics: will she find a new purpose?

These, and others, join the well-known Senator Bail Organa to begin the long, slow process of throwing off the Emperor's shackles from the shoulders of the galaxy.

Excerpt: Star Wars: The Emperor's New Thorn [Working Title]

“War educates the senses, calls into action the will, perfects the physical constitution, brings men into such swift and close collision in critical moments that man measures man.”

Master Solar frowned at the recitation of this quote during their final argument, the morning before he left. It was the culmination of a series of arguments that he had had with her about the need to do something, anything, to restore the Jedi name and execute the duties of the Jedi in the face of extermination.

“Jedi do not fear, Master, isn’t that what you say? We shouldn’t fear action, especially not now.”

“There is a difference between fearing a course of action, and acknowledging it as foolhardy, my young padawan.”

“Doesn’t that suggest a lack of trust in the Force? Who’s to say that something we do isn’t what needs to be done? I feel like we need to do something, Master. We can’t just sit around doing nothing!”

“We shan’t accomplish anything by running head-first into a platoon of Clone Troopers, either, Din. No, we will find refuge, husband our allies and resources — those we can find — and meditate. Rashness will get us nowhere. Mind your feelings, Din. Remember the Jedi Code.”

The Jedi Code was something drilled into every Youngling and Padawan as they trained to become Knights one day. Yet it seemed distant. Difficult to find relevance in this post-Order 66 world. Instead, he called to mind another quotation from the same philosopher:

“Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage.”

He hoped to the Force that the courage he thought he was exhibiting wasn’t the ‘foolhardy’ kind his Master warned against. He hoped, and watched for Maya.
