Opening the birds's cage
an excerpt
Finally , a little boy came, carrying the symbols of royalty: the crown, the scepter, and the sword. Elric’s father, as the nearest of kin, took them and said the solemn words.
“By this sword, do you promise to keep the people entrusted to you safekeeping, to fight for them, protect them, even lay your life down for them? Do you promise to use this blade against their enemies, and for their allies?”
“By this sword, I promise to keep the people entrusted to my safekeeping, to fight for them, to protect them, to lay my life down for them. I promise to use this blade against their enemies, and for their allies.”
The Duke gave him the sword in his right hand.
“By this orb, do you swear to uphold justice and promote peace? Do you swear to be accountable to your people and lead them by example?”
“By this orb, I swear to uphold justice and promote peace. I swear to be accountable to my people, and lead them by example.”
His heard felt heavy at those words. If they knew the example he was really bringing, the example of someone who had let down the person he loved.
The Duke gave Elric the scepter of justice in his right hand, and Elric crossed both over his heart.
“May this crown then serve as reminder that you are not yours anymore, but you belong to Hur as much as the country belongs now to you.” Said the old Duke, taking the crown. All five Dukes then came and touched the crown as the duke d’Alatheia gently put it on his son’s head. One could have heard a bird flutter, among the assembled people.
“I give you Elric the first!” the Duke said. The crowd exploded in deafening shouts of joy. “Long live Elric the first! Long live the king! Long live Hur!”
