David glanced over at Lisa. Her hands were shaking slightly, her puffy, red eyes looking down at Alyssa’s sleek black violin case. David realized with a pang that she was probably remembering the many times she and Alyssa had played together, performing violin duets at school concerts and church meetings, bringing cheer to nursing home residents with rousing renditions of Christmas carols, or simply goofing off, trying to compose songs, often right in this very room.
'She’s got to get out of here,' David realized, 'And so do I. We need to get away from this all, we need to have fun, do something that lets us forget, for even an hour. Escape from this terrible tragedy.'
With full intention of asking Lisa to accompany him to the local bowling alley, David mustered up his courage, and finally said, “Lisa? Do you want to go see the Vernuli String Quartet with me tonight? They're playing at Center Lee Auditorium downtown tonight.”
Lisa turned to him, eyes wide, studying his face carefully, tears still flowing down her cheeks.
David bit his lip. He hadn’t meant that, he didn’t mean that, he certainly couldn’t go watch a string quartet anymore than Lisa could, too many painful memories…. Memories, though, that he’d find everywhere, at the ice cream store, at the beach, and even at the bowling ally. And as painful as it was, David didn’t really want to forget; after all, how could you forget your own twin sister?
