Synopsis: By The Sword
In the years leading up to America's Civil War, Edward Jenkins constantly finds himself at odds with others' expectations for him to be just like his murdered abolitionist father - a man Edward never knew.
When the war starts in 1861, a drunken commitment and pressure from his community means that Edward is suddenly taking up the fight his father left unfinished. Thrust into the unwilling role of local hero and leader, Edward struggles to make it through a war that shouldn't be his to fight.
Excerpt: By The Sword
From the Prologue:
I should confess today.
Kent ran his trigger finger over the barrel of the pistol he gripped with his gloved right hand. The smooth metal spoke to his finger of the damage he could inflict, and Kent knew he was prepared to do so righteously, by the grace of God. Two men in long black coats and tall hats stood behind Brown, speaking in hushed tones that rang vaguely of apprehension. Kent shook off the snow that had gathered on his shoulders, pulled his back erect, and looked to the moon in the sky as he breathed a warm breath onto the frigid air and watched the puff rise toward the heavens before dissipating as quickly as it had been formulated.
It is too late.
