Excerpt:
Messages kept passing between the two of them.
Steve would write about his day and what he was up to and Michelle would respond about her day no matter how dull it seemed to her, he seemed interested and these messages were making her life just that little bit more exciting. It was nice to be sharing her life with someone she probably would never see. She still hadn't said anything to Ed and felt a bit guilty about keeping this "relationship" from him, but as they both said, distance was very helpful and with the economy the way it was, travel for either herself or Steve seemed out of the question for the time being. They would be keeping their relationship on screen.
One day, she was online and the two of them were "talking" and Steve posed an idea to her.
-You know, it would be nice to be able to hear your voice again Michelle.
-I don't know about that Steve, it's nice to be able to type, less awkward.
-You could call you know.
-Yes, I know, but I'm too nervous!
-Nervous about what?
-Just talking to you for "real" that's what!
-You just pick up the phone and dial
Her nerves were jumping, she felt excited and nervous, a trait that was becoming very familiar recently. She watched as he kept sending messages.
-773
-I'm not going to call
-221
-Not going to happen!
-6024
-Steve! I'm not going to call. Very tempting though.
-773
Yikes! Michelle was so very tempted to call. She found herself pacing around the computer room wondering if she should actually pick up the phone and call him.
-It's really easy to do ya know! You pick up the phone and press those little numbers.
-Not as simple as that. Very funny though!
-Come on Michelle, it would be so nice to hear your voice. Again, it's 773
He entered the phone number again one line at a time. Michelle was pacing and giggling as she watched the numbers appear on the screen. She found herself reaching for the phone and watched as her fingers pressed the buttons, 773-221-6024. She clicked off the phone and paced around the room a few more times and then pressed the redial button and the little green phone to make the call. Holding her breath, she listened as the number was being dialed and then she could hear the phone ringing and the urge to hang up the phone almost overtook her, but she held her nerve and listened to only two rings before she heard...
"Hello?" hearing a smile in his voice as he spoke.
