Synopsis: Crux Shadows: Vicious Cycle
In the original piece, there were these beings, The First, that were seen as gods. They were respected and worshipped while in truth, none of them ever wanted to be held upon such a high regard. In truth, they were once human.
NaNo ’07 took a peek at what it was like to be The First before they ever transcended. It took place when the “plague” occurred – the J’kih binding, and I got a chance to fully understand the people behind those masks and godly personas.
SF ’08 followed the bitter aftermath, humanity’s revival, and one character’s step into transcendence.
NaNo ’08 will do deeper and one more step back from NaNo ’07. It’ll begin at the point when the world changed just over a year before the plague fully came to realization. At the end of July 2095, ES: Antarctica found something – a buried treasure, and they fully intend to recover it at any cost. Dr. Matthias Rynarin, the J’kih’s herald, realizes this a little too late, and the story unfolds through the point of view of each of The First as they were in human form. It spans a year and four months and then jumps again to 2596 – the year where the original storyline takes place and the cycle restarts again.
Excerpt: Crux Shadows: Vicious Cycle
“First, there was the void – endless and empty. Then, a step forward. Chaos, for change always happens, erupted, mixing and merging the cosmos. Earth, wind, air, and fire – what comes naturally in the creation of life – grew into a home for creatures that would come. Thought breathed life into mere being through intelligent thought. Fate saw the strings as they aligned, tied together, and created this great tapestry.
“Humans learned, progressing, and Magic existed as a window to the soul and its infinite potential. They harnessed that energy and grew, but Technology grew faster, and logic became more acceptable, easier to understand, than the whims of possibilities and inspiration.
“Sunyata, Caduceus, Hephaestus, Ishtar, Prometheus, Parcae, Morgan, Apparition, and Asculapius – names given to those, The Ancients, that embraced their humanity alongside their paths and kept the balance needed to transcend. They were led by the Keeper of Secrets and Master of Lies, Aeon, for centuries and passed their torch when the flame would flicker in so few hearts. Then, after what seemed like a millennia, the torch was lit again.
\“It has been nearly five centuries since the last torch was lit. We have been through countless wars, renaissance, and the day of reckoning. Still, here we are. Here we stand. Awakened, enlightened, we have accepted our burdens alongside our gifts with comprehension and faith.”
As Lord Reith Donovan was finishing, he smiled to his congregation of children, the fledglings and children of tomorrow. “Tomorrow, you will change, children. The fire that burns so bright will transform you from that infinite potential to infinite being. How will you stand?”
“With an open heart and an open mind,” they replied.
