Jaike Culver’s mind awoke grudgingly as the morning alarm sounded. His head hurt and every neuron in his brain screamed to return to unconsciousness and some vague, peaceful dream he couldn’t recall. Without bothering to open his eyes, he felt along the side of his cot for the alarm and keyed it off. With a final deep breath, he opened his eyes and got out of bed.
