Excerpt: In My Own Shoes

CHAPTER ONE – Mondays and Tea
A truth: you don’t know how you’d react, how you’d feel, what you’d do, or say, you can imagine, if you’re brave enough, or care enough for the person going through a traumatic death of a much loved one. But you don’t know.
There is a saying that you have to walk a mile in “their” shoes. In my capacity as a Hospice nurse I had walked miles with other people. I cared. I was the “expert”. I knew there’d be shock and pain and tears even if, like me, you weren’t the crying type. But I couldn’t know, not really. Their shoes were their own. They didn’t fit me, then.
