an excerpt

As I strapped on the last shoulder pad, I knew that I would not be coming home. At times in a soldier will know that he cannot survive the fight. Our small fleet and Army, against the Galactic Utopian Fleet and the Galactic Utopian Army. We would all die. As I took my steps down the temple I saw a young boy. He was not much older than I was at the begging of this adventure. I stood silently and stared at him, and remembered the beginning of all this. How simple life had seemed. I walked silently towards him and greeted him. I solemnly put my hand across my shoulder covering my rank to signify I was initiating an unranked discussion with him. He nodded and did the same, meaning he recognized the friendship and openness of the conversation. I sat down silently next to him, as we stared into the blankness of the soon to be battlefield, on this ruin, forest planet. Staring into the land where body’s and blood would lay within the next few hours, depressed my heart again. The Utopia greatly outnumbered us at impossible odds.
