Synopsis:

As-of-yet-unnamed-country is a country ruled by magic, where the head of the magic guild has practically all the powers of a king. It is every child's dream to enter the magic academy and work for the guild, but only the most talented are accepted.

Medea is a young woman who has long loved magic. She studied hard, and knows all the spells, but cannot gain entrance to the academy. One day, she finds a little girl, lost, half dead, and amnesiac, and takes her in. To avoid rumours, she calls the girl her "kitten", and treats her like a daughter. However, she has a dream one night where a man tells her that, should she kill this child, she will gain all of her magical strength, to use as her own. She does, in the dream, and discovers that it is not a dream after all. Thus powerful, she locks away these memories and enters the academy, believing that she had, indeed, found a kitten that died.

All is not well for Medea, however, after a few years. Newly-graduated students are sometimes given younger novices as helpers and proteges, and Medea's reminds her startlingly of a girl she cannot remember -- namely, her "kitten". She soon finds the man from her dream, so long ago... and he wants her to kill her little novice, as well, and take over the guild, with him as her advisor. In an attempt to save her, Medea frames the young novice and gets her exiled from the country.

Elaine, the novice, finds more trouble than border guards when she tries to return. In fact, she runs into a war that could envelope the continent, and comes face to face with the true nature of her existence.
