“Everything has a consequence.” That’s what my father told me before he spanked me. I was eight and had just thrown a temper tantrum that would have made Atlantis sinking look like a popping bubble. And I had also eaten the whole two jumbo-sized bags of Skittles and lied – shamelessly – about it.

Funny – and rather soap opera-esque – thing, as those were the last words my dad ever told me before he died, three hours and twenty-six minutes later.

He had gone out to buy more Skittles for my birthday party.
