My sister came back for the first time in two and a half years the morning after our mother killed herself.
“I stopped at Hunan Hao’s,” Caroline said, holding several large plastic bags as she stood on the doorstep.
“It’s ten in the morning,” I said after several long seconds of disbelief.
She sniffed. “Can you take my suitcase in? These bags’ll break open all over the floor if I don’t get them to the table soon.”
“Caroline?” My aunt Janie said as she stepped of the kitchen. “Oh, my god –”
Caroline looked up at Janie for a long moment. Then, she set the Chinese food down on the coffee table in the living room. “Aunt Janie, ” Caroline said, standing up a little taller.
I suddenly felt very tired.
