“I hate this,” Golem grumbled as he dug a little hole into the rich soil. “Burying the evidence like a criminal. You know that’s what I feel like sometimes, a criminal.”
“Quit your griping, you baby,” Ravid complained while pacing from one end to the other on the earth mound that sat firmly upon Golem’s head, “He’s better off living with out knowing and he’s better off dying with out knowing.”
“He’s bound to find out one day, and when he does he’ll hate us.”
“Moan, moan, moan,” Ravid waved his hand in front of his face as if batting a fly several times, “He’s a child. He doesn’t want to know.”
“Children are naturally curious of course he’d want to know, especially if he had some inkling that something was going on, and besides he’s hardly a child anymore. He’s what? Seventeen years old,” Golem grumbled, he now had a little iron key in his giant hand and seemed to be weighing it.
“Yes, and that’s still a child.” Ravid snorted.
“There are times when he looks at me with those bright, blue eyes of his, and I find myself almost telling him everything…”
“You WHAT?”
“…and there are other times when I feel like he knows, and is only humoring an old man.”
“How could he know? He can’t possible know, and I’d have known if you’d told him. And don’t go trying to tell him. Tell me you won’t tell him.”
“I can keep secrets.” Golem muttered unhappily as if he was doing Ravid a great favor which was not at all true.
The slanted eyes of the little elf were enough of an indicator that Ravid was having trouble believing his colossal friend capable of keeping this secret. But because Golem could not look upon Ravid’s face and Ravid would not outwardly voice his distrust they both said nothing and a silence fell. During the silence the key that Golem had been cradling was dropped into the hole, and covered with dirt.
