an excerpt

We were having a meeting tonight. I walked quickly through the crowd towards the front where Damon was standing. He and I were always in the front. We liked to put in our two-cense every now and then. And besides, this meeting was important.
"Thank you all for coming," Carnell, the leader of our clan spoke up, and the room fell silent. "As I'm sure all of you have figured out, we are here to discuss our safety. I'm afraid to say that we, the Ghargiens are no longer safe in our homes." I shuddered. I knew perfectly well that we were not safe. I knew probably more than anyone else there. The humans were hunting us, and it was only a matter of time before my new clan was next. I had to protect them. I would not let the same thing happen to them.
Damon glanced at me a second before Carnell continued. "As we all know, in April of this year the California clan was slain. We could very well be next. I advise you all to be very careful around the humans. Take note of any unusual behavior that you might notice. Or if they are starting to treat you differently. We have not, as of yet, figured out how they identify us. Make sure your crystals are well disguised."
"Excuse me, Domr, but what are we going to do if we are next?" Raymond had his hand in the air. He always was one to interupt.
Carnell sighed deeply. "We might end up having to go into hiding." The clan burst out into objections, but I stayed quiet waiting for Carnell to silence them. "I know it is not something you all are wanting to do," our leader's voice carried over the crowd, "but it is the only way to save ourselves." Silence returned. "The Elders and I have been discussing it, and since we can not harm the humans, it is the only way."
"What about our jobs?"
"What about the childrens' education?"
"Where would we go?"
No one said anything to these Ghargien's questions, but looked to Carnell for the answers. I felt sorry for him then. I would not want to be the one everyone turned to in times of trouble. I like to just follow along. But something had to be said. They had to realize that they were truely in danger! They had to realize it was serious and real!
I cleared my throat, ready to put my two-cense in, hoping to make them see. "Domr Carnell is right." My face grew hot as everyone turned to look at me. "This is serious. The humans are a true threat to us. I know from personal experience. My clan is dead. They were slaughtered by the humans in the dead of night. When we are the strongest. They came with guns and knives and fire. We are magically bound not to harm them, but we tried. We tried and they still died. If we stay here knowing we are next we will die, too." The clan was quiet as I spoke and I knew they had heard me. Eyes were downcast, no longer looking me in the face. I had never spoke openly about that night until now. They knew what I had gone through and were ashamed now of being so selfish.
"Thank you, Josh," Carnell half bowed to me. I bowed back still red in the face. "We will not jump to any conclusions about our clan being the next target, but please tell me if in the future any of you may feel that the clan is in danger. I will make arrangements to find a place where we could go should we ever need to go into hiding. We need everyone to be
on guard from now on. The last thing we want is for our family to be killed."
After the meeting, I did not stick around to talk with my friends like I normally did, but instead went staight home with my guardian, Garrett. Garrett was a good man. When I first came to Texas and joined Carnell's clan, he took me in. He had never married or had any children of his own, and had a big two-story house with plenty of room for one more, so he volunteered to let me live with him. We got along fine and had never had any problems sharing space.
"You okay?" He asked me when we entered the house. He looked at me anxiously waiting for me to assure him of what he wanted to hear; that I was fine and I did not want to talk about it. Which was true, I did not want to talk about it. I wanted to keep it inside me like I always did. I knew this was unhealthy, but I just could not bare to talk about what had happened to me and my family that night almost three years ago. If I talked about it then it would be final. It would not feel like a really bad dream that I might some day wake up from.
"I'm fine, don't worry about it." I smiled and walked up stairs to my room. I knew he would give me my space for the time being. I shut the door and laid down on my bed, sulking. I had to find out who was responsible for killing off the Ghargiens. I had to find them and stop them. Whoever it is was going to pay, that's for sure. I was not going to let them get away with it, human or not. Ghargiens have never laid a hand against the humans. Mainly, of course because we couldn't. A long time ago, our ancestors made a magical pact with the humans. We would protect them during the night when they slept, and they would protect us in the day while we were asleep and the sunlight took our strength away.
Unfortunately, the Ghargiens made a mistake during the spell, and now we are bound to protect the humans day and night. Which means we physically or magically can not harm any human.
