Ink Blot
an excerpt

After I finished my sandwich, I started to get sleepy and laid down on the

couch. I tried to stay awake so I could remain in my thoughts, but sleep

eventually won the battle. I wish that I had won because it was then that the

dreams started.

I was walking around in a fair when really out of nowhere a fun house

suddenly stood in an area where it used to be completely empty of everything

except grass. At the entrance was a man in a black suit and a top hat. He

looked right at me and with a long finger, he beckoned me over. Everything

about him put me in a trance and I felt like I had no choice but to listen to his

call. As I was nearing to house, he turned his back on me and walked inside

with fluid-like movements. I finally reached the doorknob of the house and

walked inside, the door hinges creaking as the door shut behind me.

What I saw astounded me. All along the walls were what seemed like

hundreds of mirrors. At the end of the hall, the man was standing, his head

bowed and his hat covering his face. I walked over to him and when I tried to

touch him, all I felt under my fingertips was a mirror. I turned around and saw

him behind me somehow, yet he was still another mirror. After trying to find

him numerous times, I finally got frustrated and decided to leave. The door

was gone. I was still in the same hallway, but the door seemed to vanish into

thin air.

“Let me out!” I screamed.

All of a sudden, the lights went out and I was left in total darkness except

for a spotlight surrounding only me. I started to walk away, but when I left the

circle of light that I was in, it went out and I could see nothing but darkness

around me. I took a step back and the light came back on, but this time,

directly in front of me was another spotlight. And in it was a lone mirror. As I

neared the mirror, the image of the man that lead me to this place slowly

appeared. This time, though, I saw his face.

He had a perfect jaw line, wonderful pointed nose, and eyes as black as

coal. He stood with his arms crossed with his back straight as if he had

complete confidence in what he was doing. When I finally reached him, I tried

to hit him, but all I hit was the mirror. I cried out form the impact and I felt as if

something cracked in my hand. I looked back at him and he had a mocking

smirk on his lips.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked him. “What do you want?”

His top lip curled over his teeth and for a moment, I thought he wasn’t

going to answer. But with one swift movement, he reached through the mirror

and pulled me to him, pushing my head back and kissing me passionately on

the lips. When he finally stopped kissing me, he put his mouth to my ear and

whispered,

“Your sanity.” And pushed me down on the floor.
