Synopsis: Static

Dennis Westlake thinks that he's about to have an ordinary lunch date with his boyfriend, Bobby Reece. Instead, Bobby announces that he is in fact a "she" inside. Bobby--AKA Juliet--plans to begin the transition to becoming a woman socially, perhaps even physically. The story examines the changing dynamics of Dennis and Bobby/Juliet's relationship. It is told through both present narration and flashbacks to various moments in their past relationship.

Excerpt: Static

Every year, Melanie throws a Halloween bash. That year I draped a sheet artfully around my body and made it a toga. When I walked into the apartment, Melanie greeted me wearing a low cut, above the knee nurse’s uniform complete with a syringe held by a lace garter.
“Honestly, Melanie.” I shook my head, then looked around the room.
“Bobby is over there. I know you’re looking for him,” Melanie said, pointing at the other side of the room.
“Where?”
“There. In the pink skirt.”
My eyes widened when I saw the figure twirling in a pink skirt and white blouse, mysteriously long blonde hair flicking around his face, sticking to ruby red lips. Bobby stopped twirling and waved at me, beckoning me over.
“What are you, Bobbette?”
He laughed, eyes sparkling merrily. Still the same sea green eyes. I breathed a sigh of relief, glad that Bobby hasn’t actually been abducted by some female alien.
“Still Bobby.” He put his hand on his hip, striking a pose. “Like my skirt?”
He won the costume contest that night.
