I paused briefly as we passed the remainder of the houses on the outskirts of the city. “Well, this evening’s been exceptionally exciting. You show up, we get stuck in fog, and then we both think about going to the ocean at the same time. Then we head there. I’ve never done this before.”
“Well, obviously.”
“Fehl.”
“Huh.”
“I like cheesecake.”
“Me too.”
I frowned, wondering why I even said it, and then turned to him. “You didn’t find that weird?”
“What?”
“I just randomly told you that I like cheesecake.”
“…So?”
“I’ve never done that before. Do they have cheesecake in the Omegaven?”
“How else would I have told you that I liked it?”
“I don’t know. Maybe in that period of time between when you woke up in the field and when you came to my door.”
“Nope.”
“What field did you wake up in anyway? Was there a river nearby?”
“Um… Yeah. I think so.”
“Maybe it was the same one Eavied left me in.”
“Coulda been.”
“Then after that, I met you.”
“Yeah, and I tried to take you away.”
“And then you really did.”
“And then I became an idiot.”
“And then I felt sorry for you.”
“And then Sitra tattled on me and I got punished.”
“And then I ran away with you.”
“And then… I’m done.”
“What?”
He smiled. “Ocean.”
“Ocean.”
“Ocean.”
“Ocean, ocean.”
“Cheesecake.”
We both laughed.
