Excerpt: The Remarkables: Beginnings

There remains no explanation for this occurrence. I have spent many years and vast amounts of money looking at the phenomenon from every conceivable angle, but still I am none the wiser as to the real cause of it.
I hope it does not sound too presumptuous to say that I am a very well connected and successful man. As such I was among the first to learn of this occurrence. Naturally I was sceptical at first, despite seeing one of the first demonstrations. I had people analyse every piece of data available, but they could find no trace of forgery. In the end I had to accept that I had been shown was true, a new breed of human had emerged. It seemed ridiculous at the time, perhaps you think I am mad as you read this, like something out of comic books or films or cartoons. Human beings, born with miraculous, endlessly varied, beautiful, frightening and frankly dangerous powers.
I remember the first so vividly. A group of scientists had found her in some rural area of Tennessee. An equally well connected associate of mine had found out about it mere days before these scientists went public. I am infinitely grateful for his swift work in covering up the issue. He’d taken in the girl and the scientists and given them funding and shelter in exchange for all the data they found. When I arrived after his mysterious invite, I was surprised to find one of the most select, elite and powerful gatherings of men and women I’d ever seen in my life. I can’t name any of them of course, but let me assure you, world leaders are nothing compared to these people; they are the ones who really rule the world. I’m honoured to count myself among them.
After we had made our greetings, we sat to watch the demonstration. None of us had any idea why we were there. I watched from the other side a glass wall. The scientists and my associate entered the room with a teenage girl. She looked well looked after and happy, if a little nervous. After a quick nod in our direction, they began.
One or two of us gasped, a number nodded and clapped appreciatively (I later learned that these men and women had already heard the rumours and had some idea of what to expect) and the rest including myself, simply frowned in bewilderment. The girl had disappeared before our eyes, reappearing seconds later several feet to the left. She did this again several more times, appearing in different places each time. There was no flash or bang or anything else you might expect from a teleporter, just being in one place one moment and gone the next. For a finale, she walked over to our associate and rested a hand on his shoulder. He smiled at us and then they were both gone. After they didn’t reappear again, there was moment of unrest, but we soon heard a satisfied cough behind us. There he stood with his young teleporting girl, both beaming with pride. There was a gentle round of applause and we congratulated him on a grand performance, demanding to know how he’d done it.
Months later, dozens more like her had appeared, with their own unique powers. It was a difficult time, no one was quite sure on how to deal with this. We dealt with each case as it came up, keeping things silent, making deals with those who would co-operate and other less pleasant deals to deal with those who wouldn’t. You may think me an evil man, but I sleep easy knowing how dangerous they could be left to their own devices. That old mantra, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, has never been truer.
After a time, things started to settle down. Myself and those others who held real power came to an agreement, to keep this under wraps and under control as best we could, for the good of all people. I am pleased to say that we have done so successfully, and still do so, to this day.
