an excerpt

Abby Montgomery sat by the window, watching the city below her come to life. She’d been sitting there for hours, a beer in her hand, just watching the flurry of activity below until gradually, with each hour that passed, the bustle crawled to a standstill.

Abby had no idea how long she sat there. It had been dark when she first settled down on that spot, her only company the sound of silence.

Dawn was now breaking; the city waking up.

What did they know that she didn’t? What was it that made them get up this early, greeting each new day with such joy and hope? What was the point of it all anyway? Life sucked. And a new day would not change any of that. She ought to know.
