Excerpt: Rationing Love

I may use this section as a mini-NaNo diary. Sort of like tweets, but only about NaNo.
11/1/09 - Well, it has begun. Haven't found my MC's voice yet and a bit of panic ensued. I suppose the plot will come to me at some point... it has the last two years, anyway.
11/2/09 - Spent some time yesterday afternoon thinking about and getting to know my MC. I think I know who she is. Basically. But I need to find the likable things about her! She's kind of mean.
11/3/09 - Next year must remember how difficult the beginning is. Inner Editor escaped from her closet, told me I was crap and couldn't possibly write a book again this year, that my characters are unfocused and unformed and there's no real plot. I replied, "Oh yeah?" (SO literary.) Mantra: It's a rough first draft, it's a rough first draft, it's a rough...
Part two, later that same day... Went to http://scottwesterfeld.com/blog/?p=1822 and took his suggestion. It ROCKED!
11/4/09 - I sorta started over. Not really, since I should be able to use much of what I've already written, but the tone of the book has changed. Not sure how much humor there will be.
11/5/09 - My novel is schizophrenic. One day it's light-hearted, the next day it's not. But I'm going with it and reminding my inner editor that what I'm hoping to get from this is a ROUGH first draft!
11/6/09 - Difficult writing day but think I am finally getting on track. Getting to know the people and the community.
11/7/09 - Worked out plot twist. I like it, but it further muddies the waters in terms of which genre my book fits.
11/8/09 - Now working backward from plot twist, which won't be revealed until the end. Revisions will include making sure clues are planted properly... not too many, not too few. Tricky. I've never done that before! Should be interesting.
