Later, after the concert:
“Ash…Ash – it was like fairies singin’! I heard fairies once, you know, back when I was with my second family. We went through a woods when we got kicked out of our village and we heard ‘em. They was having one of them Revels like in the stories, and the music they was singin’, it was like that! I didn’t know regular people could sing like that. After we heard the fairies that one time I kept trying to sing like them but I could only remember the one bit, and me Mum at the time, well, she kept boxin’ my ears until I left off, sayin’ it was bad to draw the attention of the fairies down on them by tryin’ to sing their music, but now to hear it again…
“Ahh, but who’m I kiddin’? No way a kid like me gonna get a chance like that, and I sure ain’t gonna try singing it at the Firelight. People get funny when you start singing fairies’ music around them. Can’t figure why, though.”
“You say you remember some of what you heard that night? How did it go?”
“What you mean like the words? I don’t really know the words, they was in fairie language, but I kinda remember the sound of ‘em.”
“Sing it for me.”
“What, now?”
“Sure. No one around to hear it but us. This part of town you could kill a cat and no one would crack a shutter."
A few moments go by in silence and Ash thinks maybe he’s pushed the little Ant too quickly, but then, quietly, hesitantly, Ant begins to sing.
