When arguing with those who think their hometowns are the most wretched and therefore their childhood the worst, the youth of Fairview have several points that, when supplied one after the other, can never be beaten. For the youth of Fairview, the acute awareness of their town’s shortcomings is a sport, one at which they could always win and one that is almost worth the shortcomings themselves. By the time they are in middle school, every Fairview child knows enough about nearby towns and cities to hold their own against all other children they might meet. This began many years ago and, until Fairview becomes a destination, or at least a stop on someone’s detour, will continue for many more.
