That's the Way it is. [working title]
an excerpt

“Oh, because in actuality, you’re so straight? I maintain, I helped you.” Sabrina rolled her eyes and continued to chip off her bright green nail polish. Dishes forgotten, Anaya eyed her best friend. Most days just her friend, sometimes her good friend, but on days like this particular one, her best friend. In her black and bright green plaid pleated mini skirt, black and bright green argyle knee socks, plain black t-shirt, and bright green plaid high top Chuck Taylors, her shoulder length hair pressed and back in a ponytail, she hardly bore any resemblance to Anaya’s eleven-year-old heroine in the baggy dark green t-shirt and 3-sizes-too-large faded black jeans with the wild, wind-blown hair and dusted brown Sketchers. Anaya contemplated making an ‘It’s the S’ joke, but decided against it and continued putting the dishes away.

After a few minutes of comfortable silence, but for the sound of Sabrina’s chucks tapping against the cabinets beneath her and the dishes clanking together ad Anaya moved them, Anaya spoke. “How is everything with Melanie?”
