Death on a Slide
an excerpt
Just before Tom Holly collapsed while playing our opening theme, I’m Getting Sentimental Over You, I had whispered half joking and half taunting, “You’re just showing off for that girl.” He looked at me with that penetrating gaze he had of seeing deep inside you—the one I could never decide if it spooked me or my own transparency to it infuriated me. Probably a little of both.
He had answered with his standard retort, “It’s MY band, a little detail you still seem to have trouble remembering,” adding, to drive home the point, “and it isn’t called showing off, it’s called giving the public what they want, the star.”
It was the same answer I’d heard from Tom Holly, the owner, original organizer, and resident control freak of The Sentimental Gentlemen and a Doll, for something going on thirty years now. But of course he had never dropped dead before—that at least, was new.
