Chapter Two

Somewhere near Carrollton Grove Street stood three Imperial Magistrates. They were noticeable by their immaculate black suits, black top hats with tiny red feathers poking out of the top and the black ebony canes they carried to disguise the swords sheathed inside.

Passersby hurried along, occasionally casting dark looks in their direction. Something was happening and no one wanted to be in the middle of it. The tallest of the three Magistrates, Duncan Fleet, fished around in his waistcoat and pulled out a gold pocket watch that was inlaid with rubies and emeralds.

“The bastards are late,” he growled.

The one beside him, Ignatius Dowager, a short and stodgy looking man whose top hat hid his bald-head, laughed a deep and bellowing laugh. “You know their kind keep a different schedule from us.”

The third Ulysses Norrington, a tall and slender man with a red moustache and a scar that ran down the left side of his face, scoffed at those words. “They want us to wait,” he said in a deep voice that belied his fragile appearance. He tapped his cane against the curb they stood on and was just about to make another comment when four dark figures appeared across the street from them. One of the figures beckoned them and the three men crossed the street.
