Favorite novels: The Shining, Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Hop On Pop

Favorite writers: Douglas Adams, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, James Joyce, Dr. Suess

Favorite music: Tom Waits, Billy Joel, Warren Zevon, Scissor Sisters, Coldplay, U2, They Might Me Giants, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, anything loud and fast, anything from the '80s, ambient, chill, jazz, most everything but sappy love songs which are fine but I shorted out one keyboard with my weeping and that's enough.

Non-noveling interests: Drawing my webcomic, playing with my cats and dog, photography, staring at the sky, looking for music to listen to, keeping my backyard looking spiffy, and accidentally smashing bits of myself with household objects.

Brief Author Bio:

I'm small, itchy and easily distracted by kittens, puppies, and '80s music. I write to keep my demons at bay, however my demons emanate a foggy shroud that keeps me from thinking clearly half the time and so the majority of what I write makes me feel like English wasn't my first language. Other people seem to get a kick out of it though, and sometimes those people are real and not even related to me.

This year I started contributing to the 100 Word Stories Weekly Challenge at podcasting.isfullofcrap.com and all my entries can be read there or on my blog, sisterpepperspray.blogspot.com. I'm still doing my comic at monkey.comicgenesis.com, although this year the stories I'm telling there have nothing to do with the story I'm telling here.

Synopsis: Black Heart of Mine

A small mining town is being consumed by a dark power and it's up to a group of saloon patrons to put aside their differences and save the world. Rah!

Excerpt: Black Heart of Mine

Lily opened her door and leveled a pistol at Jake's face in one move. "Get the hell away from my door," she said, backing Jake along the hallway to his own door.
Jake held up his hands, taken by surprise not by the fact that Lil would greet him this way, but the gun she was holding.

"Is that my gun?"

Lil cocked the revolver and lowered her aim.

Knowing he didn't have time for small talk, Jake blurted out, "Did you hear screaming?

"You bragging?"

"On the hill, sounded like…it sounded bad."

"Coyote."

"No, I know what coyote sounds like, I--"

"Why don't you go out there and find out?"

...

If asked, not many of the townspeople would have said they particularly missed Virgil Liston, however those same people, if asked, would admit to rather not having seen the inside of his head while they were eating.

In the hours following the sudden demise of Liston, many people found in him a purpose. This might have pleased Liston had he been alive, much younger, sober, and able to use the interest of the people to his benefit. Alas, people only wanted to get as far away from his corpse as possible and Spencer Calloway had decided it was drunkenness that led to his death.

"You think his head came off when he tripped on the stairs?" Jake repeated, incredulous.

"Well, look at him," was Calloway's only argument.

Jake had looked at him. Or what was left of him. The torso and legs were lying face down--or would be if the face was still attached to the rest of the body--at the bottom of the wooden steps up to the dining hall. The head was some twenty feet away, covered with a tablecloth until Jake was done with his initial inspection. Douglas Barton had discovered the left arm as he led his sobbing wife and son home, and the right arm had yet to be found.
