The Four Sisters: Power of Water
an excerpt

One
I expected this. I knew that there would be a change in me, something that two years ago would have seemed impossible. Had someone told me that my life was about to change in ways I couldn’t imagine, I would have laughed and sent them on their way. But not now. Now, I knew that the women in my family held a secret that would alter the way we saw the world and the way the world saw us. That is, if the world found out about is. Centuries ago it had and the result was bone-chilling.
A few days ago I asked Tierra what it was like, the change, and even though I know she cared about what happened to me, her answer was less than vague. If that was at all possible. At least it didn’t hurt, not like I thought it would. She said it was almost like a sickness, something that was growing or changing inside of me and I would know was happening but couldn’t quite pinpoint what “that” was. And even though she described it as a sickness, she said I wouldn’t feel sick.
But it would all be over tomorrow. Tomorrow I would be sixteen.
Tomorrow I would be a witch.
At first Mom wasn’t completely sure it was going to happen. She hadn’t told any of us about the power in our family, hoping to avoid it. Tierra, as the oldest, was the first last year when she turned sixteen. And even though it seems that her powers are specialized, I couldn’t be sure the same thing would happen to me.
“Hey,” Tierra closed the door to our room behind her. I was so absorbed with my thoughts that I didn’t even hear her come in. “How are you feeling?”
“Are you going to ask me that every time you see me today?”
“Well…now I’m not,” she called from the closet while changing into a pair of green track pants and a white t-shirt. “But at least now we know it’s definitely happening.”
