an excerpt
She went outside and retrieved the plastic hummingbird feeder to change the sugar water, and thought of the cat. They would sit at the picture window and watch the hummingbirds come to drink on the balcony. She'd have to watch them without him, or with the new cat who wasn’t coming until Christmas eve: wings vibrating as they sucked nectar and hovered in place.
It amazed her, how birds communicated. You could put out a hummingbird feeder with sugar water and within hours, hummingbirds would arrive. How did they know? how did they tell each other? It was sugar water in plastic, not red,, not fragrant, not marked on a map somewhere, and yet they found it. They found her. Madly cooking pumpkins and organic chard and the pale white flesh of an enormous anjou pear, she was waiting, longing to be found.
