Synopsis: Amare Vivere Est: The Ponderings of a Soul
Sixteen year old Kallias, the son of a wealthy Athenian politician, lived a fairly sheltered life before his father went off to war. With his father away and his mother busy taking care of his younger siblings, he is free to do as he pleases. His new found freedom is short-lived, however, as an encounter with a stranger ends with Kallias being turned into a vampire.
For two thousand years, Kallias is forced to wander the earth alone only knowing of one other like himself. He is never quite satisfied by his life on the outskirts of society, but he manages to carve an existence for himself without ever being a true participant in human society. That changes, however, when he travels to America to view a recently discovered manuscript believed to have been written by Socrates himself. There he meets Ethan, a scatterbrained college professor, who is studying the manuscript.
What begins as a mutual interest in the manuscript quickly becomes something far more despite Ethan's initial hesitations about Kallias's perceived youthfulness.
When Ethan discovers Kallias's secret, will the two be able to put aside their differences, or was their love doomed from the start?
Excerpt: Amare Vivere Est: The Ponderings of a Soul
“What do you think it means then, dear Socrates, to live?” An unknown man inquired of their host. Kallis could not remember now the location of their meeting or even the original subject of their dialogue. He could, however, remember with unfailing clarity Socrates’ response.
The man had answered simply, “To love.”
It took twenty-four hundred years for Kallias to realize the veracity of that statement
