She gestured. "That's the road to Bagaiaua."
"Another town?"
"No, Bagaiaua is another Land." She pointed at the distant mountains. "That road goes straight for seven hundred miles, across the plain, over the mountains, to a Way on the shore of the ocean. No settlements, no outpost. Just the Way."
The road looked disused. "Why does no one go there? Is there nothing beyond? Is it a... a dead end?"
"There's plenty beyond. Bagaiaua is only two Ways from Cal Deia. Heart of the Corridor."
His eyes widened. He looked at the hazy mountains with new interest. "I would like to see that."
She snorted. "The Way is ambichronic. That's why no one goes there." She laughed at his puzzlement, and tousled his hair. "Leave that to the Lanesmen, kiddo." She set off again, striding briskly toward Teol. "Next thing you know, you'll be strolling into Truth with your eyes squeezed shut and your fingers crossed. You'll never see your cliff again then, will you?"
He looked one more time at the mountains, then turned to follow.
